Human-Animal Hierarchies of Beings in Aristotle and Ecclesiastes - Literature Essay Samples
Animal rights have recently become a topic of interest in contemporary society, primarily due to the endangerment of many species, and the use of animals for types of lab testing. Human understanding of animals in the western world is shaped by the Greek philosopher Aristotleââ¬â¢s ideas of the human-animal relationship ââ¬â present in his work Nicomachean Ethics. Other definitions of the human-animal relationship contrast with Aristotleââ¬â¢s, such as Qohelethââ¬â¢s in Ecclesiastes, a book included in the bible. Aristotle determines that animals are subservient to humans due to their inability to reason, whereas Qoheleth suggests a form of equality between humans and animals due to their shared fate. By contrasting these philosophical texts, I argue that Aristotleââ¬â¢s faulty logic of human superiority creates a problematic mindset that can lead to human exploitation of their relationship with animals. However, Qohelethââ¬â¢s interpretation places humans in an in ferior context, promoting a sense of equality that allows for a respectful relationship between humans and animals. Aristotle distinguishes humans as superior due to their ability to reason and attain happiness, aspects he sees absent in animals. To define the work of humans, Aristotle characterizes each form of life: plants have a ââ¬Å"life characterized by nutrition as well as growth,â⬠animals have a ââ¬Å"life characterized by sense perception,â⬠and humans have an ââ¬Å"active life of that which possesses reason,â⬠(Ethics 1.7.1098a 1-4). Aristotle uses the term ââ¬Å"sense perceptionâ⬠, referring to perception gained from oneââ¬â¢s five senses, to describe the ability of animals. This contrasts with intellectual perception, or in Aristotleââ¬â¢s terms the reason that characterizes the life of humans. Aristotleââ¬â¢s distinction between animals and humans has two impacts. First, by creating categories, Aristotle narrows oneââ¬â¢s perspective, subjecting animals to a single defining factor and ignoring all others. He has restricted the viewpoint of animals to this term, to an extent causing other possibilities to be ignored. Secondly, Aristotle creates a hierarchy, in which humans are at the top, followed by animals and plants. Aristotle makes humans a superior being to whom animals are subservient. This is problematic, as in seeing animals as lesser beings, humans can act without consideration of their lives. Humans can ignore pain and suffering caused to animals since they are not equal beings and are thus undeserving of a respect for life. Aristotle further divides animals and humans by their ability to attain happiness. Aristotle states that humans are endowed with reason, and ââ¬Å"the work of a human being is an activity of the soul in accord with reason,â⬠(Ethics 1.7.1098a 7). Through reason humans can attain eudaimonia, a state of happiness. However, animals are unable to reach eudaimonia, for they are unable to reason; ââ¬Å"we do not say that either a cow or a horse or any other animal is at all happy, for none of them can share in such an activity,â⬠(Ethics 1.9.1099b 32 -1100a 1). Aristotle uses examples of domesticated animals to present another image of superiority and the difference in human and animal ability to achieve happiness, once again places humans into a realm of superiority as they are the only beings that can experience the true meaning of life. In addition, by determining that animals lack the ability to achieve happiness, Aristotle, implies that animals are insignificant. They do n ot possess what the meaning of life is said to be; thus, animals must possess trivial lives. In maintaining this mindset, it becomes easy for humans to exploit animals; if their lives are meaningless, what difference will their misuse make? Humans begin to take the lives of animals for granted. The difference in the characteristics between humans and animals creates an unequal relationship, which justifies the mistreatment of animals. In contrast to Aristotle, Qoheleth indicates that animals and humans share the same fate, framing humans in the context of a higher power, proposing a sense of equality between humans and animals. In his revelation of the meaninglessness of life, Qoheleth argues ââ¬Å"that God is testing them [humans] to show that they are but animals,â⬠(Ecclesiastes 3.18). In this statement, Qoheleth acknowledges the tendency of human beings to feel superior to animals and returns human beings from a state of superiority to inferiority, by placing humans in the frame of God, subjecting them to a higher power. In reducing human beings to animals, Qoheleth implies the presence of an equality between them. He explains that ââ¬Å"the fate of humans and the fate of animals is the same; as one dies, so dies the otherâ⬠¦ all go to one place; all are from dust, and all turn to dust again,â⬠(Ecclesiastes 3.19-20). Qoheleth uses language and syntax to parallel the fate of human beings and an imals, offering a visual representation by mirroring his words. Also grouping animals and humans together using the word ââ¬Å"all.â⬠He does so to explain that regardless of being an animal or human, all are born and all die, suggesting an equality in death. Qoheleth emphasizes that ââ¬Å"humans have no advantage over the animals,â⬠(Ecclesiastes 3.19). A human advantage would likely be identified as the reason Aristotle speaks of. Qoheleth deems this irrelevant as the differences between humans and animals in their abilities is unimportant since their fate is death ââ¬â the paths animals and humans take may be different, but they begin and end in the same place. The shared fate of humans and animals is why humans cannot be considered superior beings. Qoheleth also explores the possibility of humans and animals both having a soul in his statement that ââ¬Å"they all have the same breath,â⬠(Ecclesiastes 3.19), suggesting a spiritual equality. He rhetorically asks, ââ¬Å"Who knows whether the human spirit goes upward and the spirit of animals goes downward to the earth?â⬠(Ecclesiastes 3.21), and purposefully leaves the question unanswered to indicate the lack of knowledge humans possess about animals and even themselves. The highlight of a lack of human knowledge further prevents the development of superiority and distinctions made between humans and animals, as the truth is unknown. Whereas Aristotle seems to know so much, Qoheleth declares that humans know too little and, therefore, cannot claim a superiority over animals. He continues the idea of a shared fate between humans and animals throughout the passage by using similes relating the two, ââ¬Å"Like fish taken in a cruel net, and like birds caught in a snare, so mortals are snared at a time of calamity,â⬠(Ecclesiastes 9.12). Qoheleth uses an example of land and aquatic animals, indicating that all forms of animals and humans are included in a shared fate. This is contrary to assumptions usually made, in which humans are said to be related to mammals, a specific category of animals. Qoheleth proposes a unique idea in which there is equality of fate between animals and humans, even the fish in the sea and birds in the sky. By asserting that humans are not superior to animals, Qoheleth prevents the adoption of the mindset Aristotle presents. Instead, Qoheleth defines the relationship with this shared fate between animals and humans to be one of respect for life, as neither is above the other in the eyes of God, the higher power. The two texts send different messages about the human-animal relationship, one defines it as superiority and the other as a form of equality. Aristotleââ¬â¢s relationship defined by superiority is the one that currently influences human behavior towards animals and has created a conflicting relationship that calls animal rights into question. Issues such as overfishing, hunting, wildlife trade, and animal abuse have been created from Aristotleââ¬â¢s theories. It is for this reason that it is essential to reflect on Qohelethââ¬â¢s definition of the human-animal relationship so that a relationship governed by a respect for the lives of animals is formed, and the destruction of life by human hands is no longer incurred. In redefining the contemporary human-animal relationship, one must look away from Aristotle, and towards Qoheleth, remembering to maintain an open perspective ââ¬â not defining animals, creating a hierarchy, or assuming humans are all-knowing, and understand ing that animals, like humans, live on earth. Their lives are not inferior and deserve to be respected.

The Real History in Ralph Ellisonôs Invisible Man Essay
For our last assignment in English 253, the major essay, we were assigned to analyze some of the concepts and concerns involved in a novel from the past semester. However, that eventually turned out to not be the case, and the complete opp osite ended up happening instead. In fact, the Communist Party failed and was unsuccessful because of individual leaders wanting to emerge. African American Ralph Ellison was one of the very few African American people in support of the Communist Party in the beginning. He was even quietly involved with the communist publications, until he quickly understood that he too wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to further express his personal creativity. At first, he did not realize that the Communist Party did not care about him as an individual, and was totally blind to the fact that all the party wanted was political gains. Ellisonââ¬â¢s own personal dilemma was very similar to the narratorââ¬â¢s in the novel. He rebelled from the restrictions of the Communist Party because they would not allow his individuality as a writer and as a person. I believe that this directly correlates and highly portrays the character of the narrator throughout the novel Invisible Man. Investigation report on Project Management-Samples for Students
Question: Write an Investigation report on a topic related to Project Management. Answer: introduction Project Management plays a significant role in managing different types of projections of every industry of all over the world. The scope of the project management practices is very wide because it focuses on the innovation, strategy, teamwork, schedule, cost, quality, risk and methodologies, etc. (Kerzner, 2013). So, it is very difficult to include all these topics in a single report. So, the current report has chosen a specific topic which is project management methodologies and its role in managing project and attaining objectives. Regarding this, report will comprise five different articles of the different author who have researched similar subject. These articles will help in understanding the different aspects of the project management methodologies and provide an insight to develop a meaningful conclusion. Along with this, the author will describe the main ideas and themes which have used by past research scholars in their studies (Schwalbe, 2015). Afterwards, the reflective statement will also be described in the following paragraphs of the report. Project Management Topic Use of project management methodologies and their role in attaining objectives of the project is the main topic of this report. Project management methodologies provide guidelines and process for project managers to complete the project in the specific manner (Fleming and Koppelman, 2016). It is not a tool specific, but the organization's project management software and methodologies are intertwined. These methodologies include themes, principles, process and standards that play the significant part in completing the project in specified time, cost, quality, and resources. Using a right methodologies project manager can determine the success and failure of the project in an easy manner. There are some project management methodologies that can be selected by different organizations for completing their complex projects and these are Agile, Prince2, Waterfall, Scrum, Kanban and PMBOK, etc (Boud, Cohen and Sampson, 2014). Selected articles For understanding the concepts of different methodologies, researcher has been chosen different journal articles (Walker, 2015). These papers are based on distinct subjects such as comparison of two different methodologies for similar projects. Along with this, the study has selected articles related to the reason behind the use of project management methodologies by different organizations. Critical evaluation of the Prince2 and Agile metrologies for the complex project is also an important article for understanding the subject of the current report (Kerzner, 2017). At the time of literature, review author has found that most of the digital organizations are using Agile methodologies for completing their projects so, the author has also included an article related to the future approach of the Agile to the management of projects. Also, comparative analysis of all these methodologies is one of the necessary aspects of their study so, the researcher has included an article also which have also done a comparative study of project management methodologies (Leach, 2014). Therefore, the major articles which have chosen by the researcher are listed as follows: Comparison of project management methodologies: prince two versus PMBOK for it projects. Agile project management a future approach to the management of projects? Organizational project management methodologies Structures, contents, and use. Critical Evaluation of Prince2 and Agile Project Management Methodologies for a complex project. Project Management Methodologies: A Comparative Analysis. Idea and themes Karaman and Kurt, 2015 has been the focus on two different methodologies Prince2 and PMBOK. The major aim of the study was to compare both methodologies to determine the significant characteristics of these practices to assist in decision-making process of the organization to manage their IT projects (Karaman and Kurt, 2015). Major themes of this study were section criteria for project management methodologies. Karaman and Kurt, 2015 has compared both methodologies on different aspects such as coverage, management frameworks, IT project management characteristics, practical approach, comprehensive approach, project board activities, management by exceptions, product focus, customer requirements focus, detailed techniques, etc. (Karaman and Kurt, 2015). As per the study author has described that organizations should select project management methodologies by the overall strategy of the company and the competitiveness of the methodologies towards the strategy. Further, the company shou ld also focus on the size of the project team and priority of the project. Including this, flexibility and components are also important aspects which need to be focused by the project manager at the time of selection of methodologies for completing projects (Turner, 2016). Comparison of both methodologies have reflected that Prince2 is focused on the business case and products, but PMBOK focuses on customer requirements. Prince2 is practice and focus on critical areas, but PMBOK is comprehensive. Along with this, it has also concluded that PMBOK includes continuous monitoring on different phases of the projects, but PRINCE2 has the stronger emphasis on the continuous business case only (Rosemann and vom Brocke, 2015). Major coverage of PMBOK includes stakeholder and human resource management, quality, scope, cost, time and risk. Regarding project life cycle both methodologies use different processes for managing every stage of the lifecycle. Regarding IT project management characte ristics Prince2 is appropriate for small size project as compared to the PMBOK. Overall, this study has concluded that PMBOK provides the more comprehensive approach with large techniques, but there are some features of Prince2 which have been not covered by PMBOK (Gido, Clements and Clements, 2014). So, project manager needs to choose methodologies as per their projects and requirements. Another article which has been chosen by researcher is Organizational Project management methodologies, Structure, content and its use. This study was conducted by Vaskimo in 2015. It is one of systematic research in which researcher has focused on among ten case studies of different organizations (Vaskimo, 2015). Along with this, it has also used primary and secondary data collection methods for obtaining facts and figures about the subject. Afterwards, it has been applied qualitative methods for analyzing the collected information. Major themes of this study were based on project management structure, cost, budget, schedule, risk management and reporting communication and information system. Major sections of this study are Introduction, Literature review, methodology, case analysis, cross-case analysis, discussion, conclusion, and recommendations. Review of literature has been focused on organizational, public domain and commercial project management methodologies (Vaskimo, 2015). Findings of the secondary data analysis have helped in getting insights to understand the problems of the different organizations by which author can select the appropriate methodology for resolving the problem of every case. Just because it has included ten different cases, it needed to focus on a number of methodologies also such as NOCOP, Prince2, Scrum, UPMM, XLPM, etc. The hypothesis of the project was based on structure, content, and use of project management methodologies. As per the findings of the article, organization needs to use a specific structure for project management methodologies, and these include auditing process and system, lesson learned system, project reporting, support system, cost and budget management system, risk and communication management system and information system, etc. (Vaskimo, 2015). Along with this, case analysis and cross-case analysis have found the major content which needs to be used by the organization at the time of using appropriate pro ject management methodologies. Content includes information regarding roles of team members, description of project, compliance requirements, schedule, material requirements, etc. For geting all these content organizations need to use different documents such as template and tools, process guidelines, diagrams and frameworks, and instructions. Findings have also reflected that organizations need to use project management methodologies for attaining aim, objectives and completing projects as per the cost, budget and time (Portny, 2017). Karaman and Kurt, 2015 has compared the Prince2 and PMBOK, but for including different methodologies, the current study has been chosen a research paper of Priyanka, 2016 that has been included a critical evaluation of Prince2 and Agile project management methodologies for complex projects (Priyanka, 2016). Agile is one of the major methodologies which is used by different organizations for resolving the technical problems in the present era. Research problem of Priyanka, 2016 stated that most of the IT related projects become fail due to the project complexity, intensity of the business requirements and changes in technology. One of the themes of this study has stated that Prince2 is the best solution for resolving such type of issues because this methodology divides the whole problem into different small stages which can be easily resolved. As per the study, Prince2 includes seven different principles, themes, and processes in which all processes cover whole project life cycle by w hich every organization can complete all the activities of project life cycle effectively (Priyanka, 2016). According to the ideas of this study, seven themes of Prince2 methodology includes the risk, quality, and business case of the project. Principles of Prince2 helps in maintaining the required standards. Therefore, all themes of this study have cleared that Prince2 is one of the best methodologies for organizations for managing their complex and large-scale projects. On the other hand, Priyanka, 2016 has also, disclosed that Agile is the most suitable approach for managing medium and small-scale project (Hill, 2013). This methodology highlights the development activities, product requirements, and error-free delivery. It is secondary data collection study which has analyzed the whole data using the qualitative analysis. Author has used the literature review method for obtaining facts regarding Agile and Prince2 methodology. The study has covered a detailed description of both m ethodologies which has helped in understanding these in the effective manner (Priyanka, 2016). Chin, and Spowage, 2012 has also conducted the comparative analysis of project management methodology, but its approach for completing investigation is different (Chin and Spowage, 2012). All the writers have been focused on the different project management methodologies for the different organization, but it has been applied a project management methodology for different sectors such as academic institutions, industry organizations, and government organizations. The current study has classified project management methodologies in five different levels such as best practices standards and guidelines, Sector specific methodology, organization-specific customized methodology, project-specific methodology and individualized methodology (Chin and Spowage, 2012). But, this study has been focused on only level 3 methodology and its characteristics and implication of these in three different sectors. For making the comparison between different universities, industries and government organiz ation author has used some elements which include project phases, processes, types, input and output activities, tools and techniques, checklist, etc. Comparison between different universities has been reflected that major PM practices which have been used by universities are PMBOK, Thomsett organization 3rd wave PM, Prince2, IPA, MSF and Knapp and Moore. But, on the other hand, major PM practices which have been used by industries are PMBOK, IBM RUP, and PROPS. As per the Findings of the comparative analysis, government organizations use only PMBOK for managing their projects and different phases. Therefore, as per the objective author has completed a comparative analysis in an effective manner (Pearlson, Saunders and Galletta, 2016). As per the current business scenario, most of the organizations are using project management methodologies for managing their IT projects. So, the author has selected an article which has been focused on the Agile methodology which is one of the useful practice for managing IT projects (Karaman and Kurt, 2015). So, the researcher has chosen the study of Stare, 2013 and major aim of this study is determining that whether Agile project management methodology is a future approach for managing projects of different organizations or not. Therefore, selected article has been focused on current and future benefits of Agile. As per the study of Stare, 2013 project management is emerging innovations and new techniques. Agile is one of the most popular and successful methodologies for delivering the best outcome in the era of the 21st century (Stare, 2013). This practice was focused on the field of software development and provided benefits to entire project team and client. This article was f ocused on the most innovations introduced by the Agile for different types of project. As per the study, Agile is the best approach for software development projects because it gives the highest priority to the satisfaction of the client and welcomes all changes which are required for attaining objectives. It also focuses on motivation, sustainable development, face to face conversation, self-organizing team and change management (Stare, 2013). All these aspects play important role in completing the project in a specific manner. The study has also focused on the weaknesses of the traditional approach of the project management such as allocation of the task to team members by the manager could delay the whole project. Lack of the communication, collaboration, waste of time and cost, strict sequence, the pressure of deadline are the major weaknesses of the traditional approach of the project management. Analysis of the traditional approach has helped in understanding the benefits of t he Agile effectively. Overall, the conclusion of the study has reflected that Agile can be a future approach to manage different projects in all organizations. Because it can manage all IT projects in an effective manner as compared to the traditional approach (Schwalbe, 2015). Critical evaluation of ideas Critical evaluation of the different articles has helped me in understanding the different aspects of the project management. Analysis of the paper of Karaman and Kurt, 2015 has reflected five different objectives during the selection of project management methodologies. I am also agreed with these objectives. I like the described selection criteria (Karaman and Kurt, 2015). I am also agreed with that organizations should select only those methodologies which are competitive with the strategic management of the company and provide priority to the project. Along with this, as per my opinion flexible methodologies also helpful regarding managing competencies. Therefore, I like the theme of Karaman and Kurt, 2015 which has been focused on selection criteria of the project management methodologies. I have evaluated the article of Vaskimo, 2015 and I like the way of research and structure of the whole paper. Author has completed the entire investigation in a very systematic manner (Vaskimo, 2015). Along with this I also agree with the use of different case study for a single paper because it helps in understanding the different aspects and issues of the project management by which author can use the appropriate methodology for resolving issues. As per the author, I also agree with that every organization needs to focus on structure content and use of project management methodologies (Fleming and Koppelman, 2016). The study has utilized the quantitative techniques for analyzing collected facts and figures which is one of the favorable methods for finding the appropriate result. Therefore, I am completely satisfied with the findings of the study of Vaskimo, 2015. Priyanka, 2016 has completed the critical evaluation of Prince2 and Agile in a detailed manner. I like the way in which it has written its conclusion which has provided a clear idea of all findings of the paper (Priyanka, 2016). I am also agreed with the result that Prince2 is one of the important methodologies for managing large scale projects, and Agile is beneficial for medium size and Small-scale projects. Prince2 can help in managing construction and other big projects but on the other hand Agile can resolve the IT related projects easily. Therefore, I am completely agreed with the findings of this study (Walker, 2015). Regarding study of Chin, and Spowage, 2012 I like the idea of comparing three different sectors using a similar level methodology. It is one of the different concept related to this study. Along with this, I also like the classification of the project management methodologies which can help in adopting an appropriate approach at the different level of the project (Chin and Spowage, 2012). Stare, 2013 has completed his study in an effective manner and found the meaningful conclusion for the research question. I like the choice of methodologies in which study has been chosen Agile as a modern approach and Waterfall as a traditional approach (Stare, 2013). Agile is frequently used by various organizations for managing their information technology projects. Along with this, the author has compared the Agile with the traditional practice, and I like this method for getting the appropriate result. I am also agreed that there is no other way to get the truth because without making the comparison of present with past study cannot predict the future of Agile. So, I like the design of the research (Boud, Cohen and Sampson, 2014). Disagree and Dislikes Karaman and Kurt, 2015 has been focused on only PMBOK and Prince2 which is a very narrow aspects of project management methodologies. Because there is the number of methodologies which can also be compared to batter results. Along with this, the author has not focused on a specific country, organization, and project. The whole study is based on general content which increases the expectations of readers. So, I disagree with the study regarding generalization of the content (Leach, 2014). The author should focus on a specific problem and afterward should compare the selection of both methodologies. Vaskimo, 2015 has focused on the ten different case studies of distinct organization with various problems, but it has not used all major methodologies such as agile, waterfall, etc. These two are major methodologies of project management, but the author has not included enough description about these. Along with this, the author has been focused on only three aspects structure content and use, but study needs to focus on benefits and drawbacks of every methodology which has been used by organizations for resolving problems. Also, the author has not provided specific recommendations for organizations (Turner, 2016). So, I dislike that author has not included some more points which can enhance the value to their research study. Priyanka, 2016 has completed the whole study in a systematic manner by which she found a significant and clear conclusion for the research problem. But, as per my opinion study should include some primary facts also that can include the contemporary data. It can increase the value of the research. Along with this, it has not included any specific example of the project which is one of the major dislikes of this study. Chin, and Spowage, 2012 has completed a comparative analysis effectively, but in some aspects, I am not agreed. This study has only focused on level 3 methodologies for all three sectors, and its elements were also decided which has reduced the scope of the research. Because the author has not included the risk and opportunities which are the major aspect of the project management methodologies. Along with this, I disagree with the selection of sectors all these sectors are different from each other; the author should compare either organizations or industry along with this they can compare different organizations of various industries also (Hill, 2013). As per the theme of Stare, 2013 author has compared Agile with waterfall only. So, I am not agreed with this because the objective of the study has been stated the future scope of the Agile which has a wide scope of the research, but the author has used only two methodologies for concluding. So, as per my opinion author needed to focus on other important methodologies also for getting a right conclusion and these are Prince2, PMBOK, and Scrum, etc. (Pearlson, Saunders and Galletta, 2016). Measure up with your experience The accomplishment of the current paper was not an easy task because it has included the critical analysis of five different paper which is one of the complex tasks to complete effectively. I am satisfied with my experience because I have learned lots of new things which will help in conducting future research. This research has increased my critical analysis skills, and after completing this research, I have got lots of new knowledge regarding project management methodologies (Gido, Clements and Clements, 2014). Now, I have appropriate knowledge regarding the use of the different methodology in the different project. Learning has augmented regarding importance of project management methodologies for completing a specific projects and organization's vision. Now I can easily compare different methodology in various aspects. I have got lots of new knowledge regarding research and selection of various articles. Also, the accomplishment of the research has also increased my English profi ciency also. I have faced some problem in selecting the right article for this study, but for resolving this issue, I have used inclusion and exclusion criteria. I have chosen only those research paper which was related to the project management methodologies and published after 2010 and sued the English language. Therefore, the whole research has measured up with my experience in an effective manner (Portny, 2017). Additional thoughts While I was reading these articles, I have got some additional thoughts like the author can conduct the same study in coming future for some specific real-life projects. It will help in increasing the understanding and use of project management methodologies in the effective manner (Rosemann and vom Brocke, 2015). Conclusion The current research study has been chosen project management methodology which is one of the major aspects of the project management. For completing this research, author has used five specific research papers. So, the author has selected some papers regarding project management methodologies such as Prince2, Agile, PMBOK, Waterfall, future scope of the Agile, etc. all these articles were perfect as per the objective of the study. Findings have reflected that Waterfall was one of the major approaches that have been used by organization in past years. But, at present most of the agencies are using themes, principles, and processes of Prince2 for complex and large-scale projects. Similarly, some of the organizations are also using Agile for Software development IT related projects. So, it is one of the major methodologies which will be used in future project management processes References Boud, D., Cohen, R. and Sampson, J. eds., 2014.Peer learning in higher education: Learning from and with each other. Should We Legalize Marijuana Essays (2897 words) - Cannabis
Should We Legalize Marijuana? It Is About Time Naim Jones South Suburban Community College Author Note This paper was prepared for Sociology 101, Section 002, taught by Professor Richardson. Abstract Already, we have brought "back around" old styles of fashion and music. Now, as more of our generation begins to enter the political world we are seeing a change in policies that have held firm for almost a century. More specifically, we are seeing a change in the attitude toward marijuana and whether or not it should be legalized. During the time of illegalization of marijuana, the drug had a vastly negative feeling associated with it, which many people now believe to be inaccurate and unfair. Now that people are more informed, more connected and more vocal, the United States government should allow and even encourage more research of the dangers and addictive nature of the drug which will assuredly legalize medical use and possibly recreational use to be nefit the people and the economy greatly. This paper will discuss many topics pertaining to marijuana. It will begin by explaining the history of marijuana in this country. Then it will discuss public opinion of marijua na and reasons for that opinion. Next, it will dispel false rumors about the effects of marijuana. It will then talk about a few disadvantages of marijuana. After it will counter those disadvantages with several advantages of marijuana. Next, it will discuss Colorado and Washington State's situation since legalizing marijuana recreationally. It will then inform the reader of the other states pursuing legalization of marijuana in some degree. Finally , it will conclude with Arkansas's take on marijuana and efforts to get it passed medically. Cannabis is a plant that is grown in many places thr oughout the world. It is a fast- growing plant that requires only eight to twelve weeks to mature. It chokes out most other plants grown around it and has a resistant to all but eight out of one hundred known pests. Cannabis is grown for two main reasons; for industrial hemp and for marijuana. Industrial hemp includes the seeds, stems, roots and all other parts of Cannabis except for the dried leaves. It has over 50,000 different product applications including: paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food, and fuel. Marijuana is the dried leaves of Cannabis that contains high-l evels of THC and can be used for many medical issues. THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), is the chemical in marijuana that is also produced naturally within the human brain and controls the influence of pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement . With such a lengthy list of versatile uses comes many questions all stemming from the bigger question, "What can marijuana do for us?". The answer will become evident by responding to the following questions: What is the history of marijuana in America? How does the American public view marijuana? What are the cons of using marijuana? Are there benefits from using marijuana? What has happened to states that have already legalized pot? Throughout time the U.S. government has put many sanctions and ignorant beliefs about marijuana in to the mainstream view of the American public. Times have changed and problems need solving, the legalization of marijuana is the answer to more than just a few of America's problems. What is the history of marijuana in America? As early as the 1600's hemp has existed in America. Back then, colonial farmers were forced to grow hemp to send back to England to be used in rope, sails, and clothing. It was not until the late nineteenth century that marijuana became popular for its medicinal uses. After the Mexican Revolution of 1910 the United States started to get its first flood of Hispanic immigrants. These immigrants introduced the possibility of using marijuana recreationally. Smoking marijuana really began to take off in the years leading up to the Great Depression. Due to this unfortunate timing, and the connection to Hispanic immigrants' marijuana caught a lot of blame for the increased unemployment and violence in America. By 1931 twenty-nine states had made marijuana illegal and that only increased until America entered World War II in the 1941. Following the start of the war

Jack London1 essays
Jack London1 essays One is led to believe that if a person is an author, then that person would have the best education that is available to them. However, this is not the case for Jack London. He dropped out of school at the age of fourteen and explored San Francisco, stole oysters, worked for the government, went to Japan, and traveled around the United States by hitching rides on freight trains. This is just a list of the few things he did during the five-year period while he did not attend school. He then returned and finished high school at the age of nineteen to continue onto the University of California at Berkeley, only to quit after one semester. Yet, he is described by Howard Lacchtman, as a born teller of tales (Lundberg 1). Flora Wellman gave birth to Jack London on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. Flora Wellman was an unmarried woman who came from a very wealthy background. Jack Londons father, an astrologer who was very nomadic, deserted him and his mother when Jack London was born. Jack London received his last name from his stepfather who married his mother late in the year of 1876. John London, Flora Wellman, and Jack London moved to Oakland, California in 1886 where Jack London spent his childhood years. It is said that London was a frequent visitor of the Oakland Public Library and loved to read at an early age. Yet, because of the hard times, he always helped support his family by delivering newspapers, sweeping saloon floors, setting up pins in a bowling alley and working at other jobs (Port of Oakland). At the age of fourteen, Jack London decided to quit school to escape poverty and gain adventure (Britannica.com Inc.). He did a number of things in the five-year period while he escaped from school. He pirated for oysters on the San Francisco Bay, worked to capture poachers on fish patrols, and sailed all around the Pacific Ocean on a sailing ship. He also "...

HUMAN RIGHTS - Assignment Example These violations show up in one form or other ranging from domestic violence to religious extremism, ethnocentric outlook of the societies, exploitation of the weak, human trafficking, poverty, all these make up for human rights violation. The mandate on human rights came to forth in 2000 when the general secretary proposed a mandate classification for human rights protection. The nongovernmental organizations as well as the intergovernmental organizations in different countries strive for ensuring implementation of human rights on all levels. Other sources constitute the Security Council resolutions and actions relevant to protection of human rights. Where ever there is any oppression of human rights, the U.N. and its security council ensures that this is being stopped on immediate basis. For example, in cases of wars between states and in international affairs the United Nations ensures that human rights are not being violated. Emergency meetings and veto are being passed in this r egard to protect the human life, honor and property from any unjust measures and means. United Nations Human Rights Council and United Nations Human Rights commission are few of the entities and sources in place that provide firm grounding to the United Nations cause of protection of human rights. Each of these faculties has one thing in common and that is to help the downtrodden, underdeveloped, suppressed and underprivileged with equal consideration of elimination of injustice and lack of opportunity. With prime focus on human rights, United Nations has taken concrete steps towards the development and insurance of human rights all over the world. This comes in form of development of mandates and s ources establishment for the purpose of human rights protection. The main agencies in this regard are: Declaration of Rights of Disabled: International Bill of Human rights is another move towards the insurance of human rights at different levels. Disability Rights and Education Defense Fund Universal Declaration of Human rights(Sweet, 2003), UNICEF: United Nations International Children Education Fund. UNHCR: United Nations High Commission for Refugees International law legislation and treaties and accords in this regard are few of the steps and functions that make up for the mandate system of the United Nations. Racial profiling is not beneficial despite expert's findings Term Paper
Racial profiling is not beneficial despite expert's findings - Term Paper Example It suggests that profiling undermines social cohesion, is unjust, and should be stopped. Introduction Racial profiling is a controversial subject that is increasingly on the minds of both minorities and the police. This is a common practice by which people of a certain ethnic background are targeted by the security apparatus on the belief that they are more likely to commit or be involved in illegal activity. There is no other probable suspicion except for their skin colour, and because of it they are subject to search or even detention. There are some that suggest this needs to be done in order to protect our security and to cut down on costs. However, racial profiling is inherently unjust and unAmerican. It is not a useful or acceptable practice and it may even have negative consequences for security. Background To properly understand the role played by racial profiling in the criminal justice system it is important to take a step back and look at the various theories that underlie the system we live in. There are two main models that are used to frame the criminal justice system. These two models are excellent illustrations of the thinking behind a great deal of the policy discussion relating to racial profiling. The first model is called the Due Process model. In this system, the standard to arrest and convict a person is very high. There are numerous safeguards in place to ensure that no innocent person is ever subject to any sort of invasive treatment. Everyone, no matter what the crime or the nature of the evidence, is treated with kid gloves. Not until the judge weighs in with the final conviction is the suspect sent to prison. Trials, under this model, last for a very long time and every scrap of evidence is reviewed. The problem with this model is that it is impracticable. It is very expensive and time consuming. It uses up a lot of resources in a system with limited or finite resources already. It may also permit guilty people to game the system to s ome extent. This system is often promoted by people on the left of the political spectrum. There is a second model called the Crime Control model. Under this system, the police have a great deal of power to act as they see fit. They are empowered to stop people without suspicion and hold people without charge. The prosecutors are usually presumed to be right. The presumption of innocence is somewhat limited. There are few protections regarding the civil rights of those accused under this model. An accusation is similar to a conviction. Trials and investigations are short; everything is aligned against the suspect. Suspicion is akin to guilt. Criminals have few rights and little evidence needs to be presented in order to convict someone. This model is often promoted by people on the right. These two models are good illustrations of the politics behind racial profiling. They also represent two poles, neither of which are an appropriate way to run a criminal justice system. We see that racial profiling falls into the Crime Control model, where suspects have fewer rights, but community security is the ultimate good. Preserving limited resources is important. Rather than randomly searching people, under racial profiling ethnic background is taken to imply a likely disposition to commit a crime or type of crime. Race is used as an investigative shortcut. This is an unfortunate extreme. A much better position is between the two models. Problems with Racial Profiling There are many possible reasons why

Ganges River Flow Benefits for Bangladesh â⬠How to Estimate It?
Ganges River Flow Benefits for Bangladesh ââ¬â How to estimate it? Zaman A. M. , Haque A. K. E. , Rahman S. M. M. , Mohiuddin F. A. Abstract For economic modeling in the Ganges Basin, an estimate of the water demand in the Ganges Dependent Area (GDA) in Bangladesh is required. This paper outlines a method for estimating this water demand. The proposed method is based on the integration of hydrological and hydraulic process models with economic models. In Bangladesh, a variety of mathematical models are currently used to estimate the impacts on Bangladeshââ¬â¢s water resources system for different: upstream flow conditions, local hydrologic situations, Bay of Bengal circumstances, etc. The models include basin level hydrological models, 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional hydrodynamic models, morphological model, salinity model, Bay of Bengal model, etc. The first step in the proposed method it to use these models to simulate a range of hydrologic and hydraulic scenarios in the GDA in Bangladesh. The next step involves using the outputs from these physical process models as inputs to economic models that estimate the economic benefits (and costs) in the GDA. These economic models will focus on different sectors that can potentially benefit from additional freshwater flows to the region, e. g. irrigated agriculture, open-water and capture fisheries, navigation, ecosystem services (particularly the Sundarbans), dredging of river channels, water logging in polder areas, water supply, etc. For example, currently there is practically no flow into the Gorai River, a key river in the GDA, from the Ganges during the months of January to May. As a result, there is increased river salinity and sedimentation in the southwest region. Additional flows will not only allow increased agriculture production and improve water supply options but also reduce the costs of regular dredging of key rivers in the region. These estimated benefits represent economic water demands for the GDA in Bangladesh.

Is It Required to Take a Test to Vote
You dont have to pass a test to vote in the United States, though the notion that voters should understand how the government works, or know the names of their own representatives, before being allowed to enter the voting booth is commonly held. The idea of requiring a test to vote is not as far-fetched as it might seem. Until recent decades, many Americans were forced to pass a test to vote. The discriminatory practice was banned under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Civil Rights-era law banned discrimination through the use of poll taxes and the application of any test of device such as a literacy test to determine whether voters could take part in elections. The Argument in Favor of Requiring a Test to Vote Many conservatives have called for the use of aà civics test to decide whether Americans should be allowed to vote. They argue that citizens who dont understand how the government functions or cant even name their own congressman are not capable of making intelligent decisions about who to send to Washington, D.C., or their state capitols. Two of the most prominent supporters of such voter tests was Jonah Goldberg, a syndicated columnist and editor-at-large of the National Review Online, and conservative columnist Ann Coulter. They have argued that poor choices made at the polls impact more than just the voters who make them, but the nation as a whole. Instead of making it easier to vote, maybe we should be making it harder, Goldberg wrote in 2007. Why not test people about the basic functions of government? Immigrants have to pass a test to vote; why not all citizens? Wrote Coulter: I think there should be a literacy test and a poll tax for people to vote. At least one lawmaker has expressed support for the idea. In 2010, former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado suggested that President Barack Obama would not have been elected in 2008 had there been a civics and literacy test in place. Tancredo said his support for such tests dated back to when he was in office. People who could not even spell the word vote or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. His name is Barack Hussein Obama, Tancredo said at the 2010 National Tea Party Convention. Argument Against Requiring a Test to Vote Voter tests have a long and ugly history in American politics. They were among many Jim Crow Laws used primarily in the South during segregation to intimidate and prevent black citizens from voting. The use of such tests or devices was banned in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. According to the group Civil Rights Movement Veterans, black citizens who wished to register to vote in the South were made to read aloud lengthy and complex passages from the U.S. Constitution: The Registrar marked each word he thought you mispronounced. In some counties, you had to orally interpret the section to the registrars satisfaction. You then had to either copy out by hand a section of the Constitution, or write it down from dictation as the registrar spoke (mumbled) it. White applicants usually were allowed to copy, Black applicants usually had to take dictation. The Registrar then judged whether you literate or illiterate. His judgement was final and could not be appealed. Tests given in some states allowed black voters only 10 minutes to answer 30 questions, most of which were complex and intentionally confusing. Meantime, white voters were asked simple questions such as Who is the president of the United States? Such behavior flew in the face of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads: The right of U.S. citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
